Delilah and I were setting out for a long morning walk today when I saw this odd fellow, flat on his back and struggling to turn over. (Yes, "I've fallen and I can't get up!" ran through my mind as I gave him--or perhaps, her?--a helpful flip over.) I've never seen a bug like this in my life! Large (about 2 inches long) and orangey-golden, with neon-green "wire" wings and "sunglasses" perched above his eyes. He slowly limped over to the grass, one of his wings half-burnt off--probably from a nasty run-in with a porch light. But he looked like a fighter, and trudged onward through the grass.
I have no idea what this bug was (do you?), but I'm glad he crossed my path today!
UPDATE: I've heard from quite a few of you that it's a cicada. I've seen many cicadas before, but none with this coloring, so I googled "cicada with green wings" and--lo and behold!--that's what it is! Thank you very much, insect identifiers!
